Watch: Slovakia’s Marek Hamsik puts on a show in first half vs Russia

Slovakia has only scored 1 goal against Russia in their last four meetings but in 45 minutes today, they’ve scored twice, largely thanks to Marek Hamsik. With a goal and an assist, both of the spectacular quality Hamsik has made himself the clear favorite for man of the match.

The first goal, scored by Vladimir Weiss, was set up by an exquisite long ball from Hamsik. The Russia back-line was terribly disorganized and Hamsik found Weiss with a pin-point pass from the other side of midfield. Take nothing away from Weiss, who’s control and ability to get into a good shooting position gave Igor Akinfeev little chance.

The second goal came just before halftime when Hamsik picked up the ball following a short corner. He cut in, and from a tight angle struck a shot that hit the far post and went in. It was Hamsik’s 19th goal for his country.
