After Advancing to Women’s World Cup, USWNT Wins CONCACAF Championship

In what seemed like an letdown after already advancing to the Women’s World Cup in the semis, the US Women’s National Team put the cherry on top of their CONCACAF sundae by defeating Costa Rica 6-0 in Philadelphia Sunday to win the CONCACAF Women’s Championship. They cap off a tournament in which they didn’t allow a single goal and scored 21. Hope Solo got Best Goalkeeper for some reason because she really didn’t have to stop that many shots, Carli Lloyd won MVP and Abby Wambach won the Golden Boot. Mexico received the third spot in the Women’s World Cup by defeating Trinidad and Tobago 4-2. Trinidad and Tobago have to face Ecuador to see who goes to the Women’s World Cup.

With Canada being out of the tournament due to hosting the Women’s World Cup, this was set up to be a dominating USA win. While everyone thought it was a formality, we had to remember the struggles in making the 2011 Women’s World Cup and in this year’s Algarve Cup. This tournament, no matter how easy it looked, was going to be taken seriously by the USA and did they ever show that. They had a couple shaky moments and had to adjust to an ankle injury by Alex Morgan that will see her out for some time but they used this as a tune up to the World Cup next year.

It remains to be seen if the USA will be favorites to win the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Women’s Soccer is growing in so many countries and it’s getting tougher and tougher for the USWNT to dominate like they used to even though it’s either World Cup victory or bust with this team. Canada, Germany, Japan, Brazil, England, France and Sweden among other countries will be putting up a fight and will have a shot to win. The USWNT will be facing the toughest competition they will ever face and now have 8 months in order to come up with a winning strategy. It’s going to be a great tournament, can’t wait!
