French Ligue 1 Preview

Today is the beginning of the French soccer season as Reims and defending champions PSG square off. PSG enters the 2014-15 season as back-to-back Ligue 1 champions and they are the favorite to win three straight. The only team who can really put up a challenge towards PSG is Monaco. Monaco has come on the scene rapidly and caused a bit of controversy. Monaco is an attractive place for players because for one, it’s Monaco and two, Monaco is tax free so the players can keep more of their money instead of playing for a team in France and be subject to heavy taxes. Some teams wanted to exclude Monaco from Ligue 1 or give them some points or money penalties to make up for no taxes but nothing came as a result. Monaco is free to be in the league and they will try to attack PSG for the championship with their superstar Falcao.

PSG, on the other hand, has Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic seems like he is going after the title as the “Most Interesting Man in the World” because of the things he does. I can’t really pinpoint the definitive way to describe Zlatan but this Volvo commercial is probably the best case.

Both PSG and Monaco are in the UEFA Champions League along with Lille, who are currently playing Porto in the playoff round. Look for PSG and Monaco to make deep runs in the Champions League knockout stage.
