The 10 Best Manchester Derby Games

2. Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City – September 20, 2009 (Greatest EPL game)

Voted as the greatest EPL game from the first 20 years, United and City entered into this early season clash in midseason form. Man United took the lead 3 times and Man City equalized 3 times. The latest equalizer was from Craig Bellamy in the 90th minute. Sure enough, in the 97th minute, Manchester United takes points in “Fergie Time.” Michael Owen brought it home and capped off one of the great moments in English soccer.

1. Manchester United 4-1 Manchester City – August 31, 1957

This game wasn’t really the best game, but it was the most important because this was the last Manchester Derby before the Munich Air Disaster. The lives of everyone on Manchester United changed in February 1958 as their plane was unable to take off and crashed due to slush on the end of the runway. 23 people on the plane were killed including players Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan. All these people played in this game. The remaining 9 Man U players who survived banded together to try and keep the team from folding. They kept the team going and when Sir Matt Busby came back from his injuries, he got a new squad and Manchester United eventually got back to greatness. At the same time, they never forget what happened in Munich.
