UEFA Champions League Midway Report: Groups E – H

Group H:

Points and goal differential don’t necessarily indicate how this group is shaping up after three games, that’s for sure. One look at BATE Borisov’s -12 goal differential and third place standing and that’s all you need to know.

Porto and Shakthar Donetsk were the teams expected to do damage, but no team has been more disappointing out of the four groups than Athletic Bilbao from Spain. While they’re newer to the UCL, this team did some damage in Spain last season and are just completely out of form in European competition.

Standings:

Predicted Finish:

1. FC Porto – 14 points
2. Shakthar Donetsk – 12 points
3. Athletic Bilbao – 4 points
4. BATE Borisov – 3 points

This group is a two-horse race and it really doesn’t matter who finishes wear because neither are going to go deep in this tournament. Sorry Porto or Shakthar fans, but the reality is you are feasting on perhaps the weakest group in the competition.

Expect those two to go through and expect Athletic Bilbao to get revenge over BATE as they play host to their tie in the second half of group play.
