Video: Nigeria goalkeeper throws ball into own net amidst match fixing probe

Match fixing in soccer is a serious, widespread concern for the sport.  And with World Cup teams playing meaningless friendlies against teams not competing in Brazil, it presents opportunities that are ripe for the picking for fixing the outcome.

The Scotland-Nigeria friendly played at London’s Craven Cottage was “red flagged” according to The Scotsman because of suspicious betting patterns in Asian markets concerning the game.  Of course with published reports around the game being rigged, there would be a close eye on anything remotely suspicious during the game.

Enter Nigerian GK Austin Ejide.  On a first half corner kick, he appeared to throw the ball into his own net after contact with a Scottish player…

As unbelievable as that appears, the goal didn’t count as a foul was called on Scotland.  Incredibly, Nigeria later scored another own goal in the game, but also scored a 90th minute equalizer as the game finished 2-2.
