Manchester City were given a big boost this week when Joe Hart returned to training and then back into the team for their Champions League clash against Paris Saint Germain. With City’s defensive issues this season, and playing against a team with the attacking talent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Angel di Maria, and Edison Cavani, City were always going to need their best goalkeeper in his best form.
They would prove to need him very early on as well. Just over 11 minutes into match Angel di Maria whipped a cross into the Manchester City box. PSG defender David Luiz rose to greet the cross but was undercut by City defender Bacary Sagna. It looked like a run in the mill play, until the referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot.
There’s certainly debate over whether or not that’s a penalty. We’ve seen that play many times before and it rarely goes to the spot. Lucky for City, they still had to get the ball past Joe Hart, and you know what they say, ball don’t lie.
