Iceland made history tonight, simply by taking part in their group F opener against Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo. Many people thought that would be about it for history for the Iceland national team. After going down 1-0 to the Portuguese in the first half it looked as if there was little hope for the team from the small island nation.
Despite more pressure from Portugal early in the second half, Iceland managed to produce a moment of magic. Birkir Bjarnason became the first Iceland player to ever score at a major tournament. A cross came in from the right side and Bjarnason was all alone as Portuguese right-back Vieirinha completely left his man. The cross was perfect and all Bjarnason had to do was miss the keeper. The Iceland fans erupted as they finally got to celebrate a goal.
