Why Chelsea needs to beat Arsenal in Saturday’s big game

Chelsea vs. Arsenal is on Saturday morning and even though it’s very early in the Premier League season, this is a huge game that can spell the immediate and maybe season long future for both teams. We’ll tell you why Arsenal needs to beat Chelsea later today but right now, here’s why Chelsea needs to beat Arsenal.

Chelsea is struggling, really struggling. They sit in 17th, one spot above the relegation zone and has already allowed 12 goals. To put it in perspective, Chelsea has three losses and has as many losses now after just five games than they did their entire title winning 2014-15 season. And with 12 goals conceded, they are on pace to beat their previous years total goals conceded (32) throughout the entire season by the end of November (14 games).

Chelsea needs to beat Arsenal to end this downward spiral of poor results. Chelsea drew Swansea, lost to Manchester City (like everyone else has) and beat West Brom but then lost to Crystal Palace and Everton, allowing a Steven Naismith hat trick. All of a sudden, John Terry looks ancient and Branislav Ivanovic lost all of his talent. Thibaut Courtois isn’t the best goalkeeper anymore and is now injured. Eden Hazard isn’t playing like the Player of the Year anymore but he’s still healthy. And things have gone as far as Jose Mourinho banning “banter” with the team.

This is a team that is desperate for help and desperate for points. But all of this can turn around if Mourinho beats his good friend *sarcasm* Arsene Wenger and Arsenal. Arsenal is doing well. After a loss against West Ham, Arsenal has 10 points and is currently 4th in the table. They are a point away from 2nd and five points behind Manchester City for the lead. Arsenal has also beaten Chelsea already in the Community Shield so Wenger has finally beaten Mourinho, he just needs to beat him in a competitive game.

With Chelsea being six points behind Arsenal already and they are both fighting for a Champions League spot, Chelsea cannot afford to lose and be nine points behind. It’s still very early and it really is only a matter of time before Chelsea actually does turn things around and get back up near the top. Having said that, points in this league are at a higher and higher premium and the points scored in September are the same as points scored in May. Chelsea may have time to get it back but I’m sure the team and their fans would like to have an easier May than having to win every game at the end of the season.
