West Ham United certainly said goodbye to the Boleyn Ground in a memorable way. After going up 1-0 early, then allowing two goals to give Manchester United the lead, scored two late goals to close out the 3-2 win and close Upton Park after 112 years of memories.
The equalizer was a bit of improv as Dimitri Payet’s free kick got blocked by the Manchester United wall. After seeing what options he had, he booted the ball in the box to a rising Michail Antonio who powered the ball into the back of the net.
Then just five minutes later, West Ham grabbed the lead and really got the West Ham fans excited. This time, Payet’s free kick went off without a hitch. He found Winston Reid as he was went down to head the ball through David de Gea as even though he tried his hardest to keep the ball out, the ball found the goal as if it was fate that West Ham ends their time in their stadium with a win.
This means West Ham will have a chance at a Europa League place. Since Manchester City have all but clinched 5th place, that means West Ham would qualify for the Europa League finishing 6th in the league, needing a win against Stoke and a draw or loss by Southampton against Crystal Palace. For Manchester United, a win would have put them into 4th and would have been in control of their destiny. Now, Manchester United needs to beat Bournemouth and Manchester City needs to lose to Swansea for United to get into the top four.
