If you love high scoring contests, you were in for a treat. Defending was optional in Manchester and Leverkusen as 14 goals were scored between two incredible Champions League games.
The first, Atletico Madrid took to Bayer Leverkusen for a 4-2 away win in the first leg. Normally, a tight game like that would be the talk of the day but that was until Manchester City and Monaco got together to play in a classic. That is, unless you value defending.
The two teams combined for eight goals as Manchester City was up and then fell behind twice and then came back to defeat Monaco 5-3 at the Etihad.
Some great passing by the Man City frontline got them their first goal. Leroy Sane got open, passed to Raheem Sterling who just stayed onside and then tapped in the goal.
Monaco then took advantage of a couple of Manchester City defensive errors causing Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappe Lottin to score soon after to make it 2-1 Monaco at the half.
Monaco won a penalty early in the second half but after taking forever, Falcao attempted a rather terrible penalty that was easily caught by Willy Caballero.
But then after Aguero equalized, Falcao made up for his penalty blunder with an absolute beauty. Chipping over Caballero, he put Monaco up 3-2 with his second goal of the day.
After that, it was all Manchester City, Aguero’s side volley made it 3-3. Then John Stones made up for his previous defensive woes to give Man City the lead. And Sane finished things off for the 5-3 victory as they head to the French Riviera for the second leg.
It’ll be a very entertaining leg on March 15. Atletico Madrid may be a bit too strong for Leverkusen in Spain but Manchester City and Monaco is something else. Man City is up by a couple goals but Monaco has a strong away goal advantage so an early goal by Monaco would make it anybody’s game.
