Liverpool is in the UEFA Europa League playing French team Bordeaux in their first game in the group stage. Within 13 minutes, Liverpool defender Kolo Toure went down injured holding his hamstring. To add insult to injury, it also appeared that his teammate, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, stepped on Toure’s ankle as he was on the ground in pain.
Now it doesn’t appear that Mignolet meant any harm or that it was intentional in any way but this is certainly bizarre. I mean what reason on earth does Mignolet have to go there and specifically step over Toure? If he’s trying to get water and the water is on the other side of Toure, maybe step around the injured player to grab some water.
Maybe Mignolet was trying to help and step on Kolo’s ankle so the pain in his hamstring subsides and balances with his ankle. Who knows what went on here, but let’s just file this one under “weird.”
