FA Cup: Chelsea downs Scunthorpe United; Oxford United stun Swansea City

Both ends of the FA Cup spectrum were on display Sunday, as League One sides tangled with Premier League clubs.

Chelsea avoided disaster by dispatching Scunthorpe United, 2-0, only hours after Oxford United stunned Swansea City, 3-2.

Yeovil Town got a goal in stoppage time to tie the score at 2-2, forcing a replay with Carlisle United in the other early match.

Oxford United 3, Swansea City 2

Kemar Roofe scored a pair of goals to power the League One side past the Swans in Sunday’s early FA Cup kick off.

Jefferson Montero put Swansea ahead in the 23rd minute, but the Us drew level right before halftime on a Liam Sercombe penalty. Roofe, who is linked with a potential move to Newcastle, then scored in the 49th and 59th minutes to give the hosts a 3-1 lead.

Bafetimbi Gomis pulled a goal back in the 66th minute, but Oxford United held the lead, and sent Swansea City out of the competition — and back into the relegation scrap in the EPL on Wednesday when it hosts Sunderland.

Chelsea 2, Scunthorpe United 0

The Guus Hiddink era at Stamford Bridge kept up its bright start with the Blues taking a relatively stress-free 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United.

Diego Costa got the scoring started with a volley in the 13th minute:

And Ruben Loftus-Cheek added an insurance goal in the 68th minute to put the match out of reach.

Chelsea returns to Premier League action on Wednesday at home against West Brom.

Carlisle United 2, Yeovil Town 2

Shaun Jeffers’ stoppage time goal helped Yeovil Town earn a 2-2 draw with Carlisle United.

Carlisle United led twice in the match, first on Danny Grainger’s free kick and then on Mark Ellis’ 76th-minute header, but Yeovil Town got an early goal from Francois Zoko before Jeffers found the back of the net in the 93rd minute to salvage a replay.
