Copa MX Apertura 2015 – Week 3 Recap

32 Flags is pleased to bring you coverage of the Copa MX, the domestic cup of Mexico, and we will be following the Cup games until a champion of the Apertura season is decided. This is the third match week of the Copa MX and it features matchups between teams of the Ascenso MX and Liga MX.

News Headlines:

  • A whopping 46 goals were scored in 14 games played with three games featuring over five goals.
  • Miguel Sabah (León) and Jesús Moreno (Alebrijes) are on the top of the goal scoring table with four goals each. Sabah scored two in León’s win while Moreno had a hat-trick against Chiapas.
  • There were three upsets of Liga MX teams as Puebla was hammered by their university neighbors losing to Lobos BUAP 5-0. The other two teams that lost to Ascenso MX teams were Monterrey, who lost 2-1 to Atlético San Luis, and Veracruz who lost by the same score to Celaya.
  • As of now the group leaders are: Cruz Azul in Group 1, León in Group 2, Alebrijes in Group 3, Chivas in Group 4, Tijuana in Group 5, Atlas in Group 6, and in Group 7 it’s Veracruz  leading the pack. These teams would advance automatically into the next stage of the Copa MX.
  • USMNT hopeful Miguel Ibarra is in great form as of late, scoring once again in León’s win netting his second of the Copa MX competition.

Golazos of the Week (Copa Edition):

Christian López – Leones Negros.

A grand goal by López as some confusion in the box leads to his fantastic scissor kick that finds its way inside the goal.

Salvador Tafolla – Veracruz.

Some fancy footwork by David Villalva to stay up and to beat the defenders before launching a magnificent center cross that Tafolla headed in for the Veracruz goal was a thing of beauty.

Diego Campos – Atlético San Luis.

A long distance goal? Nice. A long distance goal winner? Even nicer. Good on Diego Campos to upset one of the better teams in the Liga MX.
