VIDEO: Uruguay and Paraguay Score Beautiful Headers, Draw 1-1 in Copa América Play

Uruguay and Paraguay faced off in Copa América group B play with both needing a win to automatically advance into the knockout stages of the tournament. Both teams battled hard and eventually the match finished with each team scoring just one goal apiece.

Both goals were beautiful headed goals, and the first came from Uruguay’s José María Giménez in the 29th minute and it came from a beautifully taken corner that found Giménez in the box and he powered the ball in for the 1-0 Uruguay lead. Take a look.

It did not take long for the equalizer to come after Uruguay took the lead as right before halftime Lucas Barrios headed in a corner as well. In almost similar fashion to Giménez’s goal, Paraguay took a nice corner that found Barrios in the box and he delivered a powerful header that found the corner of the net leaving Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to dive at a ball he knew he could not stop and Paraguay leveled the game at one each. Have a look.

The game would end at one-all and with this result both teams will advance to the next stage of the Copa América as Paraguay finished with five points, two behind leader Argentina, and Uruguay will advance with one of the two spots reserved for the best third-place finishers in the group stage.

In the other game of the tournament, Argentina beat a resilient Jamaica squad 1-0 thanks in part to a goal by Gonzalo Higuaín. Although Jamaica lost all three of their group games, they demonstrated a valiant effort only allowing one goal in each game, but also their offense was their undoing as they did not score a single goal in the tournament.

With these results Argentina wins Group B, Paraguay finishes second, and Uruguay advances as well as they finished with enough points to be one of the best-placed third-place teams. Jamaica, with no goals scored, bow out of the tournament joining fellow CONCACAF member Mexico in being the first teams eliminated from the South American tournament.
