With Atletico Madrid holding a 1-0 lead on aggregate coming into the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal, Bayern Munich were always going to have to score. Though they had the benefit of being at home in the second leg, it still would not be an easy task as Atletico Madrid are one of the most difficult teams to play against.
Just like the first leg Bayern were finding that to be the case. Every attack they threw at the Spanish club seemed to get stymied. Bayern just could not find their breakthrough.
But just after the half hour mark Bayern got their break when they were given a free kick from just outside the top of the box. Up stepped Xabi Alonso, and with the help of an unlucky deflection, Bayern Munich had leveled the tie.
The 1-0 scoreline put Bayern level on aggregate, meaning if it stayed this way after 90 minutes we’d be looking at extra time. But just a few minutes after Bayern took the lead, they were given a penalty. Thomas Muller was going to the spot and things were about to get real interesting.
At halftime the score remains 1-0 and 1-1 on aggregate. It should be a great second half.
