In theory, Stoke City should have walked out of Old Trafford having lost 4-0. Manchester United entered the match having scored four goals against the champions Leicester City and Stoke have been among the worst teams in the league.
But things never seem to work out like that. On-loan goalkeeper Lee Grant played the game of his life, making save after save in the first half to keep a dominant Manchester United off the scoreboard. United would finally get their breakthrough in the second half when substitute Anthony Martial made an instant impact.
Martial’s goal settled down United and it seemed like the rest of the match would be a formality until the final whistle where United would claim all three points. But then the always sure-handed David de Gea misplayed a low shot, and Joe Allen was there to make him pay for his mistake.
