The final match day of the Champions League group stage is upon us. After Wednesday we’ll know who will have the glory and honor to move on to the last sixteen, who will have to trudge through the Europa League and who will fade into European obscurity for the rest of the season. Some teams have already punched their ticket to the next round, while others are only playing because they have to. Here is a look at all the groups and what needs to happen to see a team through.
Group A:
Real Madrid – 13 points
Paris Saint-Germain – 10 points
Shakhtar Donetsk – 3 points
Malmo FF – 3 points
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are guaranteed a spot in the last sixteen as they finished 1 and 2 respectively. The only battle going on in this group is to see who will head down to the Europa league and who will bow out of Europe all together. Both Shakhtar and Malmo face tough road fixtures. Shakthar is headed to Paris, while Malmo heads to Madrid. If both teams remain level on points after Tuesday them Shakhtar will advance as they hold the head to head tie breaker.
Group B:
Wolfsburg – 9 points
Manchester Untied – 8 points
PSV Eindhoven – 7 points
CSKA Moscow – 4 points
This group features one of the marquee matchups of match day six. Manchester United head to Germany to play Wolfsburg on today. The winner of that game will advance as group winners. It’s after that when things get a little muddy. If PSV beats CSKA Moscow at home, the Dutch side will progress and the loser of Wolfsburg/United will finish in third place. If United and Wolfsburg draw, and PSV win, then United will finish third and PSV will take second place. If PSV loses, then United and Wolfsburg will advance regardless of what happens in Eindhoven. CSKA Moscow will finish third if they beat PSV.

Group C:
Atletico Madrid – 10 points
Benfica – 10 points
Galatasaray – 4 points
FC Astana – 3 points
Both Atletico Madrid and Benfica have qualified for the last sixteen, but they still have to fight it out for the top spot. It just so happens they play each other in the last group game. Atletico have to beat Benfica to win the group. A draw or Benfica victory would see Benfica takes the top spot. FC Astana meanwhile, need to beat Galatasaray in Istanbul if they hope to make it into third and into the Europa League.
Group D:
Juventus – 11 points
Manchester City – 9 points
Borussia M’Gladbach – 5 points
Sevilla – 3 points
Again, like group C, the two top teams have qualified, but the group winner remains in doubt. Juventus need just 1 point when they travel to Spain to take on Sevilla. If the Italian giants get that point they will top the group. Manchester City, meanwhile, need to beat in form Borussia Mönchengladbach in Manchester and hope Sevilla can do them a favor by beating Juventus.
Gladbach can clinch a spot in the Europa League by beating City, or if Sevilla lose or draw with Juventus. If Sevilla and Gladbach finish level on points, Sevilla would claim third place.
Group E:
Barcelona – 13 points
Roma – 5 points
Bayer Leverkusen – 5 points
BATE Borisov – 4 points
Barcelona is the group winner, this much is known. Second place can go to any one of the three teams that trail Barcelona. Roma finishes second if they beat BATE Borisov. Roma can draw with BATE Borisov if Leverkusen lose or draw with Barcelona, as they hold the tiebreaker. Leverkusen will need to beat Barcelona in Germany and hope Roma drop points for any chance at second. BATE Borisov can advance to the last sixteen with a win in Rome, and a Barcelona win or draw.
Group F:
Bayern Munich – 12 points
Olympiacos – 9 points
Arsenal – 6 points
Dinamo Zagreb – 3 points
Bayern Munich are group winners. Dinamo Zagreb can not get out of fourth place. Those two teams will play in a game so meaningless, Pep Guardiola might put himself in the starting lineup to keep his players from getting injured (he won’t, actually).
While that match is meaningless, Arsenal’s trip to Greece is anything but. Arsenal need to win, that much is certain. However, it’s a little more complicated than that. Arsenal can make it real easy on themselves if they win by two goals. If they do that then they advance. In the event they win 1:0, or 2:1 then they would finish third based on head to head. If they win by one goal in a 3:2 game, then they would finish second based on goal difference. A 4:3 scoreline or higher sees them advance based on head to head rankings. So 3:2, 4:3 or higher, or win by two goals, it’s that simple.

Group G:
Chelsea – 10 points
FC Porto – 10 points
Dynamo Kyiv – 8 points
Tel Aviv – 0 points
Okay, it’s about to get a little more complicated. We will start simple, though, Tel Aviv is out, they have no chance of anything other than fourth.
The first scenario is one where the other three teams finish with 11 points apiece. This happens if Dynamo beats Tel Aviv and Chelsea draw with Porto. If this happens, it would come down to goal difference. Kyiv would win the group and Chelsea would finish second.
If there is a winner in the Chelsea vs Porto game, then that team would advance as group winners. Meanwhile, the loser of that matchup would be at the mercy of the Dynamo Kyiv game. If Kyiv beat Tel Aviv then the loser in London would be eliminated. If Dynamo Kyiv loses to Tel Aviv then Chelsea and Porto would advance. If Chelsea and Porto draw, and Dynamo Kyiv loses, then Porto is the group winner and Chelsea will be in second place.
Group H:
St. Petersburg – 15 points
Gent – 7 points
Valencia – 6 points
Lyon – 1 point
Zenit St. Petersburg has won the group, and Lyon has been eliminated from Europe altogether. Gent can qualify with a second place finish if they manage to beat St. Petersburg. They can, however lose or draw their match, if Valencia fail to beat Lyon. Gent has the tiebreaker over the Spanish side, so Valencia must win and hope Gent drop points.
