Vice has uncovered a hilarious, yet slightly disturbing, tidbit about what Rio de Janeiro is doing to combat their lack of hotels during the World Cup. The city is expecting half a million visitors during the World Cup, yet only has roughly 20,000 traditional hotel rooms. So how will they take care of this? Simple: owners of “love hotels” are turning their rooms into more traditional hotel rooms.
What’s a love hotel? Well…as the video explains, it’s a hotel room that’s rented out by the hour, usually for the purpose of carnal activities. They’re very common in Japan. I really hope these hotels got a full makeover prior to the beginning of the World Cup, complete with new furniture, carpeting, and a fresh coat of paint on the walls, because this could get very awkward for a tourist.
