FIFA Women’s World Cup stars are beginning to return to their regular club sides just as the season is reaching its apex, so get out there and support women’s club soccer!

News Summary

This week saw the return of some FIFA Women’s World Cup players, ceremonies for the return of USWNT players, and bad news about USWNT strikers.

  • Fox Sports GO will air the Seattle-Portland game this Wednesday. Watch it.
  • Alex Morgan (Portland Thorns) will miss 3-4 weeks w following arthroscopic surgery on her right knee.
  • Sidney Leroux (Western New York Flash) will miss at least three months and the remainder of the NWSL season to have surgery on her right ankle.
  • Nearly every FIFA Women’s World Cup players have returned except for some USMNT players who played to most minutes and Nigerian players with other tournament obligations.

Washington Spirit def. Seattle Reign FC, 3-0 — Video Link

  • Washington Goals: Amanda Da Costa (46′), Crystal Dunn (69′), Christine Nairn (83′)
  • USWNT members Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris returned to their Washington club before a record-setting sell-out crowd at the Maryland Soccerplex. Seattle’s Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe did not travel with the team, and Seattle clearly missed their presence.
  • Other FIFA Women’s World Cup competitors returned to Washington: Canada’s Diana Matheson and Australia’s Hayley Raso. Both put in good shifts, with Matheson getting an assist.

Chicago Red Stars draw Boston Breakers, 1-1 —  Video Link

  • Chicago Goals: Lori Chalupny (54′); Boston Goals: Stephanie McCaffrey (62′)
  • Chicago honored all eight of their players returning from the World Cup stars in front of a capacity crowd.USWNT defender-midfielder and Chicago captain Lori Chalupny scored a goal in her first NWSL match back. USWNT midfielder Shannon Boxx also returned for a late-game sub.

  • Sky Blue Goals: Nadia Nadim (39′), Brittany Taylor (60′), Christie Rampone (66′);Western NY Goals: Jasmyne Spencer (3′), Jaelene Hinkle (24′), Michelle Heyman (50′)
  • Christie Rampone is fantastic. USWNT stars Kelly O’Hara and Whitney Engen also returned to the pitch for their respective clubs.
  • This was a super exciting game. Go watch it.
