The Associated Press reports that Qatar will investigate the rapid construction of their capital city, Doha, after a rainstorm caused water to go through the roof of Doha Hamad International Airport. An airport that opened in 2014 and cost $15 billion.
The government is investigating if other buildings around the city are subject to cheap and poor construction. Doha Port Stadium hasn’t even begun construction but I would imagine other World Cup stadiums currently under construction would be looked at.
At the airport, a rainstorm caused water to go through the roof of the airport. Obviously, Qatar being in the desert, it doesn’t rain that much. In fact, three inches of rain poured down on Qatar this week while they typically average two inches over the entire year.
It’s no secret that Qatar has been the subject for poor construction and essentially slave labor of the migrant workers in building up Qatar. While it would be unlikely for Qatar to actually look into their own slave labor, they may actually look into the poor construction. The government can hide, or think they can hide migrant worker deaths in their construction from everybody, but if poor construction at one of their World Cup stadiums causes a collapse of some magnitude during the World Cup and kills a bunch of fans in front of the entire world, that might be a bit tougher to hide.
