Borussia Dortmund must beat Bayern Munich Sunday for a chance at the Bundesliga

One of the biggest games of the Bundesliga will take place this Sunday at 11:30 AM ET on FS2. The battle between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be a very critical game in terms of who walks away with the Bundesliga title in May.

In recent years, Borussia Dortmund has been the team who has kept Bayern from winning absolutely everything in German soccer. Last season, Dortmund struggled and they struggled hard in the first half of the season. The team hovered around the relegation zone until around Christmas time and ended with Jurgen Klopp resigning at the end of the season.

While Dortmund got things going again in the second half of the season, their bad run essentially handed Bayern the trophy after about two games into last season and had to settle for the Europa League.

Now, Dortmund is challenging Bayern for that top spot. After matching Bayern with five wins to start off the season, Dortmund draw Hoffenheim and Darmstadt to put them four points behind the 7-0-0 Bayern Munich. This isn’t to say that they’re already out of the title hunt but a loss this weekend will seriously lower their chances.

Bayern Munich on the other hand has been on it this entire season. They are 7-0-0 in the Bundesliga, 2-0-0 in Champions League play and has a combined goal differential of 31-3. This is a team that is unstoppable. And over the past week and a half, Robert Lewandowski has led the charge scoring 10 goals in just three games including five goals in a nine minute stretch. Could Lewandowski go on a late run for a Ballon d’Or nomination?

This Bayern/Dortmund game on Sunday in addition to their return leg on March 5 will be something of a playoff final to see who wins the Bundesliga. If Borussia Dortmund loses Sunday, Bayern Munich will more than likely see that title once again. If Dortmund does win, Bayern will probably still win the Bundesliga but Dortmund could potentially keep their head above water until the March game and if they win that, might pose a threat.
