Lionel Messi off with knee injury after 10 minutes into game

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi had to be taken off after just 10 minutes in today’s La Liga game against Las Palmas due to an apparent knee injury. It’s unknown in terms of the extent of the injury but it appeared that Messi knocked knees with the Las Palmas defender as Messi was heading toward goal.

Lot of misinformation out there concerning Messi’s injury but according to Guillem Balague of Sky Sports, Messi is going to the hospital to undergo tests.

Looking at the play, in my non Doctor role, it’s difficult to tell what the injury is other than it’s at Messi’s knee. It didn’t look all that serious and Messi was able to walk off but Messi knew it was serious enough to immediately request a sub and go straight to the hospital. It’s going to be a very uneasy couple of days for Barcelona fans as they await news.

UPDATE: Barcelona’s Twitter account reports that “Messi has a tear in the internal collateral ligament” and is out “around 7-8 weeks.”
