Joel Robles had kept Everton in the 226th Merseyside Derby for the first 40 minutes, saving 1v1 shots with his legs against Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino. But even he couldn’t help Everton’s rather shoddy defending in the final five minutes as Liverpool scored off of two headers just yards away from the goal.
The first, Divock Origi had a couple defenders around him but the guys in blue didn’t really seem to feel like challenging for the header as Origi was relatively uncontested to get Liverpool their first goal.
The second goal, right at the stroke of halftime, Mamadou Sakho put Liverpool up 2-0. Sakho was wide open right in front of the goal and I know he doesn’t score that much, but Everton still needs to put a man on him. Either way, Sakho’s header doubled the lead and he celebrated by running over to the bench to greet his pal Kolo Toure.
It may have taken a while but it seems like Liverpool is well on their way to win the 226th derby. It’s still going to be a fight but at halftime, it’s likely to be a better atmosphere in the home locker room than the away.
