Sunderland will be getting a bit of a bump in American viewership this season as USMNT and Tottenham player DeAndre Yedlin signed on to the relegation fighters this season on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. The move will certainly give the American international more playing time as a Sunderland player than if he remained a Tottenham player this season.

In terms of how this affects the teams involved, this is obviously a great move for Tottenham. Spurs isn’t planning on playing Yedlin right now anyway so get him off the books for this season and evaluate him next summer to see if he fits into their plans. For Sunderland, they are getting someone who has incredible speed and can really do some damage on the outside as well as someone who seems to not get tired at all. Whether they have Yedlin start or come off the bench, they’re getting someone who has the speed and fitness, he just needs the playing time to get used to playing in the Premier League.
As far as Yedlin himself is concerned, there is some debate in terms of if Sunderland was the better move for him and he may have been better off being on loan with a team in the English Championship or to Germany or Netherlands so he can be more assured of being an every game starter. Without knowing who all was interested in Yedlin, that would be tough to say if he made the right decision. I do know that Sunderland was interested and even if he is going to be coming off the bench for Dick Advocaat, it is a better chance for playing time than if he remained at Tottenham. Nothing against Tottenham, but Yedlin is not at a point where he’s going to get anything but the occasional start in a Capital One Cup or FA Cup game and that would be terrible for his development. It looks like this is going to be a good move and maybe he can help Sunderland stay in the Premier League this season.
