Down 3-0, Borussia Dortmund come back to win 4-3 in Europa League

In an absolutely stunning comeback, Borussia Dortmund came back from being down 3-0 to Norwegian team Odds Ballklubb after 22 minutes to win 4-3 in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League playoff stage.

In a game where Dortmund were overwhelming favorites, they fell behind very quickly to Odd. Yes, Dortmund traveled to Norway and no matter the opponent, it’s tough to play well in enemy territory but Dortmund should’ve still easily won. If you couldn’t watch the game, the @BVB Twitter account gave a very realistic view of what was happening in the game. Props to their social media department.

After just 21 seconds, Odd opened the scoring as Jone Samuelson made it 1-0 Odd.

Then after 20 minutes, Odd scored again. This time, Fredrik Nordkvelle doubled the lead and the Dortmund Twitter account couldn’t believe it.

Just two minutes after the second goal, Odd scored again and things appeared to be over. Epsen Ruud made it 3-0 and the Dortmund Twitter account seemed to be at a loss of words.

So after 22 minutes, Odd was up 3-0 and appeared to be well on their way to a huge upset and possible advancement to the Europa League Group Stage. But just like last season, Borussia Dortmund had a very rough start only to make a stunning comeback to salvage a result. Their comeback started in the 34th minute. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got a goal back and Dortmund got a little bit of hope as they went into halftime.

After the halftime break, Borussia Dortmund wasted little time before scoring. Shinji Kagawa made it 3-2 in the 47th minute and the game was on.

Then in the 77th minute, the comeback was complete. Dortmund had tied things with another Aubameyang goal and with the three away goals, held the advantage going into the second leg in Germany.

But Dortmund wasn’t satisfied with just keeping the draw, they went after the win and got that late in the game. Henrik Mkhitaryan got Dortmund the lead 4-3 and got an improbable win that was very seriously in doubt an hour earlier.

This entertaining game ended 4-3 to Dortmund and while a win was the expected result, they had to do it in the most difficult and entertaining way. Now they are in the drivers seat as they play in Germany next Thursday to finish out the series and to see who advances to the Group Stage of the Europa League. Odd will need to score at least twice to have a chance at advancement.

In the end, Borussia Dortmund’s Twitter account summarized the game perfectly.
