MLS has given more than a few tributes to the retired Landon Donovan. Donovan has been given far more tributes than I could remember. There was the US Soccer tribute that culminated with an awkward hug with Jurgen Klinsmann. Then there was the tribute at Donovan’s final home regular season game when his chose Boys II Men and Five For Fighting to perform for him before the game. And then there were a few more and I quite honestly lost count.
Today, MLS formally begins the season with the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. The draft begins later Thursday afternoon but the festivities started with yet another tribute to Landon Donovan. This time, the League decided to name the MLS MVP Award after Donovan. Or, maybe it’s MLS’ first tribute to Landon Donavon as it shows in this picture.

Look, I’m not one to crucify someone for making a mistake. We all commit them from time to time and I’m no exception. I just think that with the absurd number of tributes to the man, something like this is going to stick out like a sore thumb. I’m all for having a tribute to one of the greatest American soccer players and I’m all for renaming the MVP award to honor him, but this is seriously getting to be too much. I look forward to the next tribute where MLS honors Donovan because it’s a Tuesday.
