This isn’t necessarily a surprise but it was announced today that Raúl is going to retire from competitive soccer after the New York Cosmos finish their NASL season. The Cosmos have clinched a spot in the NASL Playoffs which will start in November.
Raúl became a legend during his 16 year career at Real Madrid. In 741 total appearances (Real Madrid record) between 1994 and 2010, Raúl had 323 total goals (tied with Cristiano Ronaldo for most in Real Madrid history). Raúl was also just recently passed by Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for most goals scored in the UEFA Champions League with 71 goals. Raúl is a six time La Liga champion and three time Champions League winner. Just seeing this video of some of his best goals, Raúl has certainly scored some beauties over the years.
Currently, Raúl signed on with the New York Cosmos for the 2015 NASL season. Currently, he has seven goals in 28 appearances. After winning the Spring season, the Cosmos have clinched a playoff spot for the Soccer Bowl.
Even though he hasn’t played at Real Madrid since 2010 and had short stints in Germany, Qatar and the United States, Raúl has kept himself busy and playing soccer around the world. While many haven’t been able to see him make a considerable impact on the field for five years, Raúl has put in a career reserved for legends. Raúl is definitely one of the best players to ever play the game.
