2014 World Cup: Group F Preview

Messi. Messi. Messi. And that concludes your Group F preview. That’s obviously a joke but the best player in the world not named Cristiano Ronaldo (and that is debatable) is drawing a huge spotlight on him during the 2014 World Cup. Everywhere you look, in commercials, print ads, and merchandise, you’ll see Lionel Messi’s face. […]

Does Franck Ribery’s injury kill France’s World Cup hopes?

To say the French national team has been in a state of flux over the last four years may be a gross misrepresentation of the facts. However, there has been one constant throughout any of the turmoil, and that’s been the steady play of one Franck Ribery. The French were counting on his goal scoring […]

2014 World Cup: Group E Preview

We are now just 5 days from the start of the 2014 World Cup. It’s so close now that you better have your watch parties set up and your jerseys and scarves clean and ready to go. With that in mind, it’s time to start breaking down the action that will happen on fields across […]

Rio de Janeiro is turning “love hotels” into traditional hotels

Vice has uncovered a hilarious, yet slightly disturbing, tidbit about what Rio de Janeiro is doing to combat their lack of hotels during the World Cup. The city is expecting half a million visitors during the World Cup, yet only has roughly 20,000 traditional hotel rooms. So how will they take care of this? Simple: owners of “love hotels” are turning their rooms into more traditional hotel rooms.

What’s a love hotel? Well…as the video explains, it’s a hotel room that’s rented out by the hour, usually for the purpose of carnal activities. They’re very common in Japan. I really hope these hotels got a full makeover prior to the beginning of the World Cup, complete with new furniture, carpeting, and a fresh coat of paint on the walls, because this could get very awkward for a tourist.

2014 World Cup: Group D Preview

In a previous preview, we’ve already mentioned Group B as the group of intrigue.  However, Group D can also lay claim to being one of the most fascinating groups in this year’s World Cup.  Once again, conventional wisdom sees Group D with three heavyweights (England, Italy, Uruguay) and one cagey, potential spoiler (Costa Rica).  However, […]

The World Cup isn’t just an international celebration of the beautiful game; it is an international advertising juggernaut as well. While the Super Bowl claims to be king of the advertising world, there is no denying the power of putting yourself in front of the biggest international audience in sports. So much so that eight […]

2014 World Cup: Group C preview

The 2014 World Cup is just days away, in fact we’re just one week away from the first game of the tournament. Over the last few days we’ve previewed the group featuring host Brazil and the other “Group of Death.” So, it’s only right that we bring things down a notch from the highs of […]

Cristiano Ronaldo is cursed, maybe

A week before the World Cup, the rosters have been set and friendlies are being played, but the most important part of this tuneup process is avoiding injury. While Mexico’s Luis Montes broke his leg in a friendly and will miss the World Cup, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo was held out of his nation’s first game […]

VIDEO: Bosnian World Cup anthem will make you wanna jump, or something

Seriously, one couldn’t dream of making up some of these World Cup official/unofficial anthems. Yet we bring you perhaps the most hilarious of the bunch today:

Anytime you can get a Yo! and a Sa ba la ba la ba du in to a song you’ve got pure gold. If only we could find out what the hell that actually meant in English (hint, leave a note if you do know in the comments section).

2014 World Cup: Group B Preview

While Group G may get the “Group of Death” label here in the states with the USA having to battle through Germany, Portugal, and Ghana, Group B also could lay claim to that title.  Although it’s not likely all four teams here in the second group have a realistic chance of advancing (sorry, Socceroos) there […]

Video: Watch Jeremy Schaap’s terrific E:60 report on Qatar

A couple weeks ago on ESPN’s news magazine program E:60, reporter Jeremy Schaap filed an incredible piece of journalism.  The veteran reporter traveled to Qatar to investigate the mistreatment and deaths of migrant workers who are building Qatar’s stadiums for the 2022 World Cup.  Of course, that’s if they get to host it after the […]

For 736 players, years of hard work and sacrifice are about to pay off with a trip to represent their country in the 2014 World Cup. However, for every player that made a 23-man roster there are others left behind wondering what went wrong and how they didn’t make the list themselves. Among that group […]

England throws its hat in the ring for 2022 World Cup

To say Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup is in serious trouble would be an understatement, given the bribery scandal engulfing the head of the national organization and the bid to host the 2022 World Cup. However, we won’t know the full details of what FIFA finds until after the current World Cup is over […]

A panda will be picking the winners of World Cup matches

Paul the Octopus made waves in 2008 and 2010 with his predictions during the 2008 European Championship and the 2010 World Cup. Citta the elephant struggled with her predictions during the 2012 European Championship. But Paul is dead, and Citta has been shuffled to the back burner in favor of a new animal guest picker […]
